Artist
Statement
I
am fascinated with glass as a material and the fusing and kiln-forming
processes in particular. My glasswork reflects a love for the
medium, an emphasis on fine craftsmanship, and an ongoing endeavor
to expand my working processes - both artistically and technically.
My
work typically features design elements of a flowing nature
created by melting glass through a wire mesh suspended in the
kiln. After cooling, portions of the resulting pool of glass
are selected, cut, and smoothed to become the focal points of
the creation. Additional glass strips are added to the composition
as the piece is assembled. Multiple firings in the kiln (generally
five or more of approximately 24 hours each) are utilized to
fuse, polish, and shape the final work.
The
completed pieces contrast simplicity with complexity, rhythmic
linear patterns with organic flowing elements. Secondary patterns
are often created by utilizing the transparent and opaque qualities
of the glass. What can appear at a first glance to be predictable
and straightforward contains elements that I hope surprise and
intrigue, inviting and rewarding more thoughtful inspection
